Improving Solution Value

Back in 2022 at Dropbox, a few of our early solutions fell flat—one of them was time tracking. Designers were moving fast, but they were skipping the hardest question: was this even valuable? I introduced a simple framework—diagnosis, principles, actions—and we built new habits like sharing transparent “plans of action” and running concept tests before investing too deeply. The shift was huge. Vague problems like “time tracking” turned into sharper needs like invoicing, and PMs got more engaged in the process. The lesson for me was clear: when you slow down just enough to validate value, you actually speed up the path to solutions that matter.
